December 2011.

Unlike last year our post-Christmas fixture went ahead, and, in reasonably good weather.

We were greeted at HGC with bacon sandwiches and coffee, before starting play Phil presented the Chairman's Cap to Neville for his recent golfing prowess playing the 9th hole at Broadway GC - no details to save Neville's blushes!!

A slightly reduced field of 24 players took on the course which was in excellent condition with fast greens for the time of year. Playing from the front tees did nothing to stop the enjoyment of the day.

There were some very good scores recorded and the pace of play was good and all players avoided the later rain.

A traditional Christmas meal was provided on completion of play.

Before Phil started the results and presentations for the day, a special toast and vote of thanks was proposed by Warren to Phil who celebrated 10 years as our chairman.

The Society is very grateful to Phil for being our Chairman and all the hard work he has put in over the last 10 years. The Society has gone from strength to strength and this is in no small part due to Phil's continuing dedication and hard work. We thank you

Winner.        Simon Waldron on 40 points

Runner up.   Warren McDivitt on 38 points (OCB)

Third   place. Geoff Doran also 38 points

Fourth place. Noel Hughes also 38 points (could have been 50 points!!)

The committee felt that we were well looked after and that the course was in good condition albeit that the greens had beentreated and were somewhat bumpy but that is what must be expected at this timeof year. 31 members attended and the Stableford average score was 30.5 points.

Outing to Naunton Downs GC 4th November 2011

TheAnniversary Cup for 2011 was attended by 31 players, a great turn outespecially for this time of year. The mild weather was welcomed albeit that thelast 4 or 5 holes were played in heavy rain.

Beforecommencing play Chairman Phil outlined the rules for the Yellow Ball teamcompetition which was played in conjunction with the individual Stablefordwhere “no gimmes” was introduced. This was deemed to be a great success asputting out is the norm in most golf competitions, and will be continued withthe exception of when playing on temporary greens.

TheChairman’s Cap was awarded to Russ Ralph as he had scored 26 points on the back9 holes at Broadway in The Pork Pie fiddle the previous day. It was a pity hecouldn’t keep it going at Naunton Downs!!

TheYellow Ball team competition was won with 36 points by Duncan Beale BobbyHooper Steve Jordan and David Morris – well played – just one team failed toreturn with the yellow ball intact!! No names no pack drill.

Themain competition was closely fought and despite the rain over the last fewholes good scores were recorded. In joint third place were Phil Bennett andSimon Waldron on 36 points,

Runnerup on 37 points was Bill Payne and a very popular winner was Neville Jelfs with38 points. Despite a bout of cramp Nev managed to limp up and receive the Cupfrom Chairman Phil.

Thenearest the pin on the 6^th hole was won by Noel Hughes, with RayCordes winning the nearest the pin in 2 strokes on the 16^th hole.

Agolfers supper was enjoyed at NDGC with the après golf drinks held at theclubhouse.

10 year anniversary outing to Hawkstone Park 11th to13th September.

The committee was unanimous in that the outing was a great success. The hotel, catering, and most importantly both golf courses were excellent. The 32 members were treated to dry if breezy weather. The Hawkstone course yielded the better scoring whilst the Championship course was a tough test especially after 2 days of golf and après golf!!.

The opening competition on Sunday on the Hawkstone course was an individual Stableford and team event. The winning team composed of Phil Bennett, Bill Payne, Dave Pearce, & Duncan Beale returning a very creditable score of 107 points. The individual competition was a tie between Bobby Hooper and Michele Petruzzerlli both on 39 points.

Annual Day Monday (Hawkstone Course).
A very competitive day in windy conditions resulted in the following winners.
Seniors Trophy: Bernie Beale on 37 points.
Ian Lamb Trophy: Bobby Hooper on 36 points.
Ladies Trophy: Elizabeth- Milnes James on 28 points .
Individual Stableford: Bernie Beale on 37 points.
Founders Cup: Bernie Beale on 37 points.
Gross Competition: Won by Geoff Doran.

Tuesday (Championship Course)
The final day was an individual Stableford and a Bowmaker team game.
The Bowmaker winning team were Andy Beale, Brian Downey, Maggie McDivitt & Tom Jelfs.
The individual winner was Elizabeth Milnes-James on a magnificent 40 points.

Congratulation to all the winners and well played 32 members of the Bell Inn GS.
Finally a big thank you to Neville and team for providing such brilliant sweaters which certainly were too good to play golf in!!!

Despite very blustery weather 32 members of the Society had a most enjoyable and successful three day golf event at Hawkstone Park on 11th -13th September. At the Annual Day on 12th September the main event winners were:-
Best Gross Score - Geoff Doran (Geoff celebrated in style!) , Best Nett -Bernie Beale.

The final of the Tom Taylor Pairs Matchplay was unplayed and there was no result for 2011.

McWolder Cup

The McWolder Cup was played at Evesham Golf Club on a fine Sunday 21st August. 12 players from each side took part. The result was an honourable draw, 4 points each, which means The Coach and Horses retain the trophy

McWolder Cup and Village Horticultural Show

The Chairman is now picking the team, from those who qualify, for the McWolder Cup to be played at Evesham GC on Sunday 21st August commencing at 1.30pm.

The Society will be having a Tombola stall at the village Horticultural Show on Monday 29th August. Proceeds are in aid of Society funds. All member are requested to provide a minimum of 3 prizes.

Golf day at Fulford Heath on 27th July 2011
A slightly reduced number of 23 players attended this outing to Fulford Heath Golf Club, this being a new venue for our society.

Before commencing the competition the Chairmans Cap was awarded for that unique achievement of a hole in one to Tom Jelfs who on the 24th July aced the 8th hole at Broadway Golf Club, unfortunately it was not in the Club Championship. Well done Tom, we hope the bar bill was not too expensive!!
The course proved a tough test with tight driving holes and very firm fairways albeit that the greens were excellent. The average score of 28.1 points reflected the difficulties.

However, some excellent scores were achieved with Steve Heritage winning with 40 points, this after having his handicap reduced by 3 shots!!. Be careful Steve you could be of single figures at this rate. Runner up on count back was Tom Jelfs on 37 points with Andy Beale in third spot. Fourth place went to George Kail (35 points) who was making a welcomed return to our outings.
Nearest the pin on the 11th hole was again won by Warren McDivitt who is making a habit of being the most accurate player of the par 3s.
Nearest the pin in 2 shots on the 7th hole was won by Dave Pearce (playing at his old club), a bit of local knowledge perhaps?
An excellent supper at FHGC was followed by apres drinks at our club house to round off an enjoyable day.
     Well done Steve!

Outing to The Worcestershire Golf Club on 16th June 2011
This is an excellent venue and whilst the cost to the society is on the expensive side we do get good value on a challenging course. It will certainly be considered for future outings.

Willersey Horticultural Show. Bank holiday Monday 29th August
The Bell Inn Golf Society will be running the tombola and would be grateful for any prizes the members wish to contribute. They should be handed to Warren.

Society Theme Night. Saturday 19th November 201. A date for your diary and details will follow nearer the time.

McWolder Cup Sunday 21st August 2011
This will be held at Evesham Golf Club in the afternoon. The final qualifier will be at Fulford Heath, and the chairman will select the team soon after this date.

Just a final word on handicaps, as some members have asked how this is calculated.
All handicaps are reviewed for the start of the year. If you have an official golf club handicap as at 1st January then this will be your society handicap subject to any reductions the handicap committee may deem reasonable due to previous society victories. Members without an official handicap will be given a society handicap.
Handicaps are then reviewed during the society playing year by our handicap committee and published.
If your official golf club handicap is increased during the year this will not mean an increase to your society handicap as some of our members only have society handicaps and therefore could not qualify for an increase during the year, however a reduction of your official golf club handicap will result in an equivalent reduction of your society handicap.
I hope this clears up any concerns.

Report on golf day at The Worcestershire

Golf day at The Worcestershire Golf Club on 16th June 2011.

Our annual greensomes competition was held on this lovely parkland course in the foothills of the Malverns, which has become a firm favourite venue for our members. The event was well supported with 18 pairs taking part.

The forecasted showers did not materialize and a dry afternoon was enjoyed.

Before playing the Chairman announced that the Chairman’s Cap had been found, after being missing for a year, and that it would be awarded to the wally who lost it in the first place. And the winner was THE CHAIRMAN well done Phil!

The chairman also advised us that Tom Barnes and Jenna had become engaged Our best wishes to them for their future together.
As usual the match proved very competitive with some excellent scoring.
The average score on the day was 31.6 points.

The winners were Simon Waldron and Steve Heritage with 41 points with Mike & Tom Barnes runners up on 39 points on a count back from Andy & Bernie Beale.

The nearest the pin was won by Warren who is making a habit in accuracy, with Bernie & Andy Beale winning the nearest the pin in two on the 18th hole.

Any excellent golfers' supper at WGC (the pudding was voted 12 out of 10) was followed by après golf drinks at The Clubhouse where thanks goodness things returned to normal with Neville winning nothing.

GOLF DAY at Lilley Brook Golf Club on 25th May 2011.
21 members enjoyed the challenge of this Cheltenham course, a new venue for many players.
The weather was good if a little breezy and the course in good condition albeit that the last 6 holes tested the leg muscles and lungs !!

The overall winner was in form Duncan Beale on an excellent score of 40 points, William Jelfs was runner up on 36 points with David McAteer in third place on 35 points on a count back from Warren McDivitt.
The nearest the pin in 2 shots on the 6th hole was won by Warren and after the chairman sorted out the difference between the time and the distance the winner of the nearest the pin on the 11th hole was Roger Yeates.
A fish and chips supper was enjoyed at LBGC before retiring to The Clubhouse for après golf where Neville was a “swindle” winner thanks to the accurate dart throwing of Beth !!! Russ & Duncan and Steve Jordan also benefited.
The average score on the day was 30.8 points.

Our next outing is the annual Greensomes on Thursday 16th June at The Worcestershire. Enter in pairs – if you need a partner call Warren as soon as possible. Full details of the day will follow shortly.

Outing to Broadway Golf Club on 20th April 2011The committee were of the view that generally we had a good day but the confusion of reserved tee times in the afternoon caused a lot of extra work, especially for Phil, and that a letter of concern will be sent to Broadway Golf Club. It was understood that the problem was with the organization of the County juniors being late in starting but nevertheless our afternoon game was unnecessarily disrupted. There was also a view that for next year the event should be limited to an 18 holes Stableford in the afternoon; this will be further considered before booking for 2012.

GOLF DAY at Broadway Golf Club on 20th April 2011
The waterproofs and bobble hats were discarded in favour of shorts and tee shirts as 29 members attended our annual day to our “home” course. The weather was warm wall to wall sunshine and many red faces sat down to our golfer’s supper.
Other than some confusion regarding reserved tee closures the day was a great success.

A Worthy and popular winner of 18 hole Stableford

The morning competition was our traditional 3 clubs + putter over the front nine holes.
This was as always closely fought with Chairman Phil on 20 points being pipped on count back by Bob Crockford.
The morning nearest the pin on the second hole in two shots was won by Malcolm Hedges who put it to 10.5 inches from the hole. The nearest the pin on the 8th hole was won by Tom Jelfs
A light lunch was followed by an individual 18 holes stableford. The 1st 10th & 17th tees were used due to congestion on the course.
After a golfer’s supper Chairman Phil presented the prizes but before doing so congratulated Harriett and William on the safe arrival on the 30th March of their son Alfie Thomas and the members wet the baby’s head, William’s obvious delight was only eclipsed by the beaming Grandfather Neville.
The swindle was awarded by a combination of the numbers of Alfie’s birth date and Yes granddad Neville was in the prizes !!.
The main competition resulted in an average score of over 32 which was very commendable.
In 3rd place on 38 points was Neville with Andy Beale on 39 points but the biggest cheer of the night went up when Maggie won on 39 points after a count back, with an incredible score of 15 points on the front 9 and 24 points on the back 9 holes The chairman was delighted to present her with the cup on her maiden victory after 10years of competing, the first of many wins for sure – Well done to all competitors.
The longest drive on the difficult 17th was won by Andy Beale, not bad for someone who hadn’t pick up a club for 6 months!!.The nearest the pin on the 5th was won by Mike Barnes.
Next outing is on Wednesday 25th May at Lilley Brook Golf Course, the first tee time is pm and full details for the day will be notified nearer the time. The entry list is at The Bell so please indicate if you wish to attend as soon as possible.

10 year anniversary to Hawkstone Park.

Phil advised that all those attending will be presented with a memorial sweater. To ensure we get members sizes correct a selection of sweaters in various sizes are at The Bell so please pop in and try on a sample to determine your size. It would be expected and appreciated that this be done as quickly as possible so the order can be placed and give time for Neville to do the embroidery

The annual Greensomes competition will be held on Thursday 16th June at the Worcestershire GC so please start thinking about your pairings.

The committee were of the view that we were well looked after and the course was in good condition and that we were fortunate that there had been a dry spell as in previous weeks the course was certainly very heavy and muddy. This venue could be considered for future years. The average score for the 29 players was 29.3 points.

Next outing to Broadway Golf Club on 20th April 2011. Meet at the golf club.
Final entry date and full payment 15th April
Registration at 9.30am (Please attend by this time to have coffee and bacon rolls, late comers may miss breakfast)
AM 1st tee time 10.30am:- 3 clubs + putter Stableford competition over 9 holes.
Luncheon:- Soup and sandwiches.
PM 1st tee time 2.00pm Normal club allowance Individual Stableford over 18 holes.
Dinner:- 8.00pm prompt. Dress code jackets and society ties.

Knockout competitions
The draws are posted and please ensure that the preliminary rounds for the singles are completed by 29th April and the pairs by 27th May.

Greensomes competition
This will be held at The Worcestershire Golf Club on Thursday 18th June, just an early reminder to get your pairings sorted out.

10 year anniversary outing to Hawkstone Park on 11-13th September.
An update will be posted to members after the next committee meeting on 11th April.

GOLF DAY at the Welcombe Golf Club on Wednesday 9th March 2011The disappointment of the cancellation of our post-Christmas outing to Hanley in Arden was soon forgotten as 29 members attended the first golf day for the 2011 season.The golf course was in good condition considering the time of year and proved a real challenge in breezy but dry conditions.The competition was intense with Steve Heritage winning the day on 36 points but there were 5 other players on 35 points, the runner up on count back was Duncan Beale and Steve Ford in third, those missing out were David McAteer Tom Jelfs and Bernie Beale.Nearest the pin on 6th was won by Pat Twigger with Ray Cordes winning the nearest the pin in 2 on the 12th (and he made the birdie). A “golfers breakfast” concluded the day at The Welcombe but an evening of après golf was enjoyed at “The Clubhouse” where the “Amen Corner” winners were draw, sorry Nev still no luck !!!

GOLF DAY at the Welcombe Golf Club on Wednesday 9th March 2011

AGM- 2010 Another Successful Year for the Society

The AGM took place on 7th February and was attended by 29 Members.
In his report the Chairman said 2010 had been another successful year for the Society with events both on and off the golf course being well attended.
2011 is a special year for the Society , celebrating its 10th anniversary with three days at Hawkstone Hark GC. This is in addition to the seven other outings including three new venues.
The annual subscription will remain unchanged at £25 and is to be paid before 4th March 2011.
The closing date for the 2011 match play competition entries is 1st March (£2 singles and £5 pairs).
The full committee was re-elected unopposed.
The date for the 2011 Theme Night has been set for 19th November.
At the end of the meeting the Chairman presented the Andrew Mcdonald Tropties for the best four stableford rounds to:-

Runner up Warren McDivitt (average 35.75 points)
