Update 1st November 2013

Outing to Abbey Hotel Golf Club Redditch on 31st October 2013

Our annual Greensomes competition for The Dave Barnett Rose Bowl was supported by 14 teams, an excellent society commitment.
The Abbey Hotel course was a new venue for most members and despite a little rain early on the weather was good for the time of year. The recent wet spell had left the course somewhat heavy under foot but in good condition for late October.
The Chairman’s cap was awarded to Steve Webb who claiming to have played the course many times couldn’t actually find it! (Blame it on the road diversions) which caught a few of us out.
The scores threw up quite a variation but nothing could match the magnificent 39 points scored by Mike Petruzzelli and Christine Cordes. Chris is making a habit of winning this competition. Well played! Runners up were Maggie & Russ (35) with Ray Cordes & Noel Hughes in third place (34).
Nearest the pin on the 6th hole was won by Tom Barnes and nearest the pin in two on the 15th (should have been the 14th enough said) was won by Noel Hughes and Ray Cordes.

The Chairman wished David Milnes-James a speedy and full recovery from his recent stroke. All members of the society look forward to seeing David back on the fairways at the earliest opportunity.
A good golfer’s supper round off an enjoyable competition.

Our next outing is the post-Christmas game at Puckrup Hall GC Tewkesbury on Friday 27th December. The entry sheet is at The Bell Inn. Full details will be advised nearer the date.
Happy golfing

Latest update 12th September

                                  Newsletter 12th September 2013

Annual Days outing to Bowood Golf Club on 8th/9th September 2013

28 members took up the challenge of our Annual days outing to Bowood GC in Calne Wiltshire. The facilities at both the hotel and golf club were excellent as was the dinner served on the Sunday night.
Breaking with tradition the Chairman did present the Chairmans Cap on this occasion to Neville for what can only be described as gross technical hypocrisy .
The golf course was quite different to that most of the members are used to in that it was 6500 yards from our tees and had some 90 or so bunkers. Some of the bunkers were huge and the remainder just very large .There certainly was more conversation at dinner about bunkers than birdies!!
The Sunday competitions were for the usual trophies and a full summary of the winners and Champagne Moments are on the attached sheet. However, the best score of 35 points was achieved by Bobby Webb playing of a 6 handicap, a great effort considering the average score for this round was 26.9 points.
The Sunday dinner was excellent and the Chairman, despite having taken wine with various members, did an eloquent job in presenting the many prizes.
The Monday round was an individual Stableford combined with a Bowmaker team match.  A little rain did nothing to dampen the spirits and Steve Webb not to be outdone by his brother won this round with 34 points on a count back from Steve Heritage. Course knowledge did little to improve the average score which was 25.4 points.
The Bowmaker match was won by Bobby Webb Simon Waldron and Chairman Phil.
I am sure that all members had an enjoyable couple of days in a very good venue despite the difficulties some of us had with the bunkers.

Next Outing
Our next outing will be the Greensomes competition on Thursday 31st October at Abbey Park Golf Club Redditch. Partners will be drawn so no need to enter in pairs. The entry list is at The Bell.
Full details will be sent out nearer the time.

Happy golfing

Outing to the St. Pierre Golf Club on 30th June & 1st July

Shorts and tee shirts weather were the order of the days on our outing to Chepstow, we even did not need wellies for the Mathern course this year!
The Sunday play over the Mathern course was a multi competition event.
The award for the most colourful dressed player was to Roger (Orange Man) Yeates who complemented his outfit with a set of orange golf balls !
Stefan White looked resplendent in silk shirt and knee length white socks, and was awarded the 'Bobby Hooper lost cars keys' cap for managing to lose his car keys on the 1st hole, the thought of Stefan in colourful attire for the whole weekend was avoided when a young person found the keys on the course and order was restored.

SUNDAY
The individual Stableford and 1st leg of the St.Pierre Trophy was won by Simon Waldron with a magnificent 40 points with Elizabeth Milnes-James runner up on 34 points, Elizabeth also won the nearest to the pin on 6th hole Bobby Webb won the nearest to the pin in 2 shots on 12th hole.
The Bowmaker competition was won by the team consisting of Warren McDivitt, David McAteer, Simon Waldron and Mike Barnes.
The annual match between the Landlord versus Chairman teams resulted in a comfortable win for the Landlords team with 351 points to the Chairman’s team score of 335 points.
At the dinner presentation the Chairman’s Cap was awarded to Keith Burke for wearing the most outrageous jacket, the material was a left over from that used to make the deckchairs for Brighton beach.
An excellent meal was provided by SPGC.

MONDAY
A beautiful day greeted the players for an individual Stableford and 2nd leg for the St.Pierre Trophy. Simon taking a 6 shot lead into the second round over The Old course. Sun glasses were in need (not sure if this was the brightness of the sun or the remnants of the night before).
The Old course proved a tough test and was in good condition. Simon returned a creditable 29 points but this was not good enough as Maggie scored a terrific 40 points and with her score of 32 points on the Mathern course was the St.Pierre Trophy winner on 72 points. A very popular and well deserved champion.
Runner up was Simon Waldron 69 points
Third place Steve Heritage 65 points
Fourth place Mike Barnes 65 points
Fifth place Steve Webb 63 points.
Nearest the pin on the 3rd hole was won by Steve Heritage and Andy Beale winning nearest the pin in 2 shots on 10th hole.
A very enjoyable couple of days and with decent weather and the Mathern course playable it may be difficult to find a better venue for next year.

Both Stableford rounds counted towards the McWolder Cup team which Phil will announce shortly. The match will be played at Broadway Golf Club on Friday 12th July.

Our next outing is The Annual Day to be held at Bowood Golf Club on 8th/9th September. Full details are to follow.

Happy golfing
Russ Ralph.

Outing to the Cirencester Golf Club  on 15th May 2013

30 members of the society took on the challenge of Cirencester Golf Club. The course had benefited from some recent rain and warmth and was in good condition with tricky greens (for some not so tricky!!).

Before commencing play Chairman Phil welcomed back Elizabeth from her injury and wished Ray Cordes all the best for his impending heart bypass operation.

The Chairmans Cap was awarded to Steve Ford, and lovely he looked wearing it.

The Stableford competition was, as always, closely contested with Tom Barnes playing of a 10 handicap winning with 41 points Mike Lewis runner up with 40 points and Brian Lawrence in third place with 39 points. The average overall score was a creditable 31.4 points.

Warren did the double by winning both the nearest in two shots on the 6th and nearest the pin on the 13th. Well done to all the contestants and winners!

There was a power cut at the club which threatened the dinner but power was restored just in time for the original menu to be served which was very good.

NEWSLETTER 11TH APRIL 2013

Outing to the Broadway Golf Club on 10th April 2013

The first early signs of spring greeted 31 players for our annual home venue at Broadway GC. The course being in very good conditions and members were delighted to play on all main greens which were in excellent condition for the time of year especially as the snow and frost only recently cleared.

Before commencing play the Chairman's cap was presented to Dave Morris following a "misunderstanding" about golf shoes on our visit to Maxstoke Park GC.

The condition and local knowledge of members’ home course resulted in excellent scoring with an average of 33.7 points. Both the ladies who played also beat their husbands’ score!!

The early clubhouse leader was Bill Payne on 40 points but soon to be overtaken by Neville Jelfs on 42 points, this score however didn’t last long as the winner Duncan Beale returned a Society equalling record of 46 points!!! Well done indeed but watch the handicaps review!!

Nearest the pin on the 8th was won by Mike Lewis with Brian Lawrence winning the nearest the pin in 2 on the 14th.

This being the week of The Masters the "swindle ball sweep" was decided by 10th 11th 12th & 13th positions to commemorate Amen Corner. Bobby and Steve Webb with Roger Yeates and Steve Heritage benefitting.

Jon and his team provided an excellent carvery to end the day.

on 6th March 2013

For our first outing of the year we were joined by the Coach & Horses Golf Society to play for The Neale Wolder Trophy. The format for the competition was an individual Stableford and the Trophy winner would be the best individual score from either society.

The Chairman's Cap was presented to David McAteer following an incident at Tewkesbury Park in December.

After coffee and bacon rolls 43 players (24 from The Bell Inn GS and 19 from The Coach & Horses GS) took on the Welcombe course.

Thankfully the Golfing Gods held off the forecasted rain, and the course was in good condition generally albeit that some tee mats were in use and the greens were somewhat bumpy, not unexpected at this time of year.

On completion of play there was time for a pre supper drink.

Before announcing the results for the competition Phil reminded us of the history of the McWolder Cup and the Neale Wolder Trophy .There was general agreement that this format was very successful and would be carried on in future.

The outcome of the Stableford competition was very closely contested with Keith Burke in third place on count back with 38 points. Runner up by 1 point better on back nine was Nigel Darrell of the Coach & Horses, but no one could match the winning score of 39 points by Tom Jelfs who was presented with The Neale Wolder Trophy and medal to commemorate the day.
Cogratulations Tom Jelfs
